Tips from my Coaches

tips from my personal trainer - By Megan KellyAs you all know by now, I gym at Curves Walker Drive. I believe that my coaches are the biggest contributors in making Curves stand out from any other gym. My coaches are constantly inspiring, motivating and encouraging me to work harder, be better and probably best of all, they celebrate every big and small achievement. Some of these girls have impacted my life in a way far greater than I ever thought possible, and besides being my coaches, I’ve gained some great friendships a long the way.

Today, I thought that I’d interview 3 of my coaches at Curves Walker Drive. Each coach has a completely different coaching style, so when yo visit, you’re bound to find someone who will challenge you, when you need it the most.

Firstly, meet Mel, who is my one-on-one coach. A woman that is so damn special to me and who has had such an impact on  changing the way I think of fitness and diets. She is extraordinary at what she does and is the only person who gets away with bossing me around to do more squats, and gets me to work my lazy arm. She kicks ass and I love every bit of it.

My motivation to become a trainer:

I have got a passion for helping people, and to be able to be in a place where I can encourage motivate and help ladies to better their lives through strength training.

What’s your best health tip?

As a health tip for all people young and old is drink enough water. Water is the one thing that can make or break your health, dehydration is the BIGGEST cause of Migraines and not being able to lose weight. If you don’t drink water you have no way of flushing your system, in other words if you were a fatty pot and you have no water to flush out that access fat all you end up with is a still fatty pot. What’s your favourite activity?

What’s your favourite activity?

WOW… my favourite activity…. Mmm?! It would have to be Zumba in the Circuit at work, but if you talking about in my free time on the VERY TOP of my list is Fishing, I love the outdoors and water. So if I could choose anything to do it would most definitely have to be to grab my rod and see how many fish I can fool into taking the bait.

What’s your favourite workout song?

I can honestly not give you one specific workout song. It all depends on what mood I am in. My music varieties differ right from the golden oldies all the way through to some of the more modern numbers, I must say if it is something I can sing along to I am in my element.

Coach 2: Christine

Christine looks petite but wait, until you see her doing the circuit – she is a machine. Like, fitness goals! Christine has always been a firm voice of reason, for me. She doesn’t just talk the talk, but she walks the walk, and makes it look so effortless.

tammy curves walker drive - By Megan KellyCoach 3: Tammy

Tammy is the newest coach to the Curves family and while I haven’t had much circuit time with her, the time that I have had, she’s expressed incredible knowledge on all things fitness related. She’s a much tougher coach than the rest, but still seems to have fun on the circuit – I like that.

What motivated you to become a personal trainer?

I’ve always been an avid supporter of the underdog, so when someone sets goals for themselves, and achieves those goals, you feel proud that you were on that successful journey with your member.

What do you think makes Curves Walker Drive different from any other gym?

Curves Walker Drive walks with women through the entire process of healthy living and weight loss. Women are not alone on this journey

What’s the one piece of advice you have for people who are only beginning or thinking of starting gym?

Remember that this is a commitment to yourself, so it’s going to be tough, but the rewards that you are going to reap are exponentially more valuable. You will thank yourself in the long run when you see the results and have no-one to thank but yourself

What’s your best health tip?

Water, water, water. And let’s not forget breakfast, the most important meal of the day, it helps kick start your metabolism. Lastly, everything in moderation. Don’t deny yourself a treat every now and then, but be aware… Don’t let ‘every now and then’ become every hour.

What’s your favourite activity?

I’m a fanatic bookworm. I could spend all day curled up with a good book. But then being the total South African I am, I love watching and attending rugby games. As far as keeping fit is concerned, well I love to speed walk.

What’s your favourite workout song?

I enjoy anything with a good beat, that’s really uplifting… (To be honest, I’m a closet metal-head, and if I were to play my kind of music, a few people would have a heat attack)
