Rhubarb and Custard have been around for over 10-years and is known for their non-adjustable pouch-sling. When I had Axl, my mother-in-law had actually bought me one, and it was THE product that I swore by. I truly believe that everyone needs one, especially if your baby is anything like Axl who always had to be held. It’s funny, Eli is such an easy-going baby, and after being fed and changed, prefers to fall asleep on his own, but Axl was the total opposite and had to be held.
Rhubarb and Custard is a South African brand, owned by Lesley. You can buy their products online and are stocked at baby boutiques, like Kid’s Emporium. While their sling pouch is the product that they became known for, Rhubarb and Custard have decided to expand their range, and focus on offering products that are inspired by international baby markets but rarely seen in South Africa.
While I was still pregnant with Eli, Rhubarb and Custard were kind enough to send me a few of their products, which we have been using since his birth. Our favourite being the Sleepeasy Sleeper; similar to a baby sleeping bag, only much lighter, and more convenient.
The 100% cotton Sleapeasy sleeper, from Rhubarb and Custard, offers the softest fabric and is made with your baby’s comfort in mind, even featuring non-scratchy labels to avoid irritating their skin. The elasticated bottom keeps your baby feeling secure, while allowing you to change your baby’s nappy without disturbing their sleep. The envelope neck makes it easier than ever to put on and take off, and in the (common) occurrence of a poo-nami, you can simply slip the sleeper down and over the shoulders to avoid things from getting messy.
The Sleepeasy sleeper also acts as a light blanket, keeping your baby comfortable and giving you peace of mind, as they cannot kick off the blanket which often exposes them to the cold or, in summer, to mosquitoes. What I personally like is that the sleeves have built in mittens, as Eli tends to scratch his face when he is stretching from having a long nap, so having mittens helps to save his face from awful scratch marks.
As mentioned, the sleeper is made from 100% cotton. Cotton is a great material, especially for baby products, as it absorbs moisture quickly and is light and breathable. In addition, cotton also works to keep your baby’s body at a comfortable temperature which means that your baby is kept cool when it’s warm, and warm when it is cold – great for keeping your baby sleeping for longer periods of time.
The Sleepeasy Sleeper from Rhubarb and Custard is available at Kids Emporium or can be ordered by emailing Lesley, who is the owner. At the moment, they only have them in the size 0-3 months but will soon have them in size 3-6 months too. There are several prints available (our favourite is the blue dinosaurs), but there is also blue cows, pink cows and a sweet printed “snooze” cloud, available in grey.
