I have often been caught forgetting some nappy bag essentials – flashbacks of explosive nappies and not having wet wipes or a change of clothes, still scar me. But after 3 years of horror stories, I am hoping to have learnt a thing or two and perhaps avoid the same fate for our second baby, who joins the family very soon. While I know I am pretty sure that I am bound to add to my collection of horror stories, here’s hoping this list of nappy bag essentials helps at least one of you!
1. Pampers Premium Care Nappies
Of course, you should always have nappies! It’s a pretty good place to start, and even if you don’t intend on being out for long, always keep an emergency kit in the car with wipes, nappies and bum cream – just in case! We use Pampers nappies with our tots, as we have found that they don’t leak as much, they’re well-fitted, gentle on the skin, absorb moisture rapidly to ensure uninterrupted sleep and best of all, despite their phenomenal quality, they’re very affordable when compared to other brands on the market (you can usually find a special on them, somewhere.)
2. Sophie la girafe Teether Toy
Things can get really boring for your baby while you are running errands, so be sure to keep a few toys and activities on hand, to keep them entertained. Sophie la girafe has a wide range of toys that your baby will love and enjoy, with everyone’s favourite being the ever-popular teether.
Sophie la girafe is made with 100% natural rubber and food-grade paint, making her a safe toy for your baby. Her flexible and soft design lets your baby easily grasp, squeeze and chew her while exploring all five senses. The bumps on Sophie’s head and legs work to soothe sore gums, while the dark contrasting spots all over her body provides visual stimulation, and her squeaker keeps your baby amused and helps them understand the link between cause and effect.
3. Baby Sense Burp Cloth
Babies spit up… a lot. And even when they outgrow the need to be burped, they come with a bunch of other messes, while exploring new foods. The Baby Sense Burp Cloth is a modern redesign on the old-school burping towel, only it is stylish, conveniently sized, and more absorbent than before. The super absorbent double-layer cloth is made from 100% cotton toweling, ensuring that messes and spills are absorbed quickly, protecting your baby’s delicate skin from moisture.
4. Cherubs Baby Wipes
You can never have enough wipes, so be sure to stock up on one of the mega-packs from Cherubs, where you get 3 packs of wipes, to store in your nappy bag, car, and nappy caddy. I have tried several wipes and keep coming back to the Cherubs range, especially the flushable baby and toddler toilet training wipes. I find that this range has a light texture to the wipe, which helps to clean stubborn messes, grubby hands, and explosive nappies, with ease.
5. Elizabeth Anne’s Baby Nappy Rash Cream
Some swear by using nappy cream during every nappy change, but I haven’t found it to be necessary and usually only opt for nappy cream in the mornings, during teething periods, or when I notice some redness or sensitivity. It’s important to start treating a nappy rash early on, to avoid it from becoming anything more serious. I usually have some of Elizabeth Anne’s Nappy Rash Cream in my bag, as it is gentle on the skin and helps keep your baby’s bum dry, by creating a soothing and protective barrier against wet and soiled nappies, thereby preventing nappy rashes.
6. NUK Soother Band
If your baby uses a soother, then having a NUK soother band or chain is essential! It saves you from having to replace the soother every time your baby decides to entertain themselves by throwing their soother out the pram, without you knowing. I personally prefer the NUK soother band as the ribbon is soft while still being durable. The soother band also conveniently attaches to soothers with or without a ring. For your baby’s safety, there are no rough edges and it features a practical design that lets you attach it securely with a single-hand.
7. Oh-Lief Natural Aqueous Cream
Oh-Lief’s Aqueous cream is such a versatile product that can be used by the whole family, that it is sort of silly leaving home without it. Their aqueous cream was the first organic one of its kind, made with organic olive, sesame and coconut oils which help to nourish, protect and soothe the skin. The formula is so gentle which makes it ideal for sensitive and dry skin, and safe for use on your baby. Besides using it as a gentle body lotion for all, you can also use the Oh-Lief Aqueous Cream to wash your baby from top to toe, while mom will love the good job it does to remove makeup and dad can use it for shaving!
8. NUK Silicone Sleeptime – Glow Soother
This is, of course, dependent on whether your baby uses a soother or not but with Axl, we always ensured that we had an extra soother nearby because you never know when you may misplace one, or need a new, sterilized one. The NUK Silicone Sleeptime – Glow Soother is one of our favourites, especially for going out as you never know when a braai may run into the night, so having a soother that is conveniently for day and night is always helpful. What makes it suitable for the night? Well, the fact that it has a cute little glow in the dark button. I found this especially helpful when trying to find the soother in the middle of the night, but not wanting to switch on the lights and risk waking the baby.
9. NUK Soother Chain
The NUK soother chain is an alternative option to the soother band that I mentioned above. You may not see a need for having them at first, but we quickly learnt our lesson when our son kept losing his dummy in his car seat, pram, or cot. Having it conveniently attached to a soother chain, our son quickly learnt that his soother was always nearby and it encouraged self-soothing at night, when he’d find his soother and put it in his mouth himself, without the need for me. The NUK soother chain comes in a variety of designs and features a reliable clip, which is made to easily attach and remove from your baby’s clothing.
10. Oh-Lief Natural Insect Balm
A quick visit to granny and grandpa can very quickly become a sunset braai, so it is always a good idea to keep some insect balm on you, to protect your baby from mozzie bites. Remember that babies react differently to mosquito bites, and that bites swell and can cause your baby to be miserable, often interrupting their sleep. The Oh-Lief Natural Insect Balm is an organic insect repellent that is great for the whole family and suitable for use on your baby from 6 months and older. Made from cold pressed extra virgin olive and grapeseed oils, beeswax, lemongrass and citronella oils, this is a great and handy balm to keep nearby during the summer months.
11. Nuby Pacifier and Teether Wipes
This is probably one of the most ingenious things that I have discovered and a complete essential for any diaper bag. Babies love throwing their bottles, cups, teethers, toys, and soothers on the ground, or like to drag their toys along the floor while learning to crawl. This means that you spend a great deal of time worrying about germs and even more time trying to keep everything sterilized, while out and about. These non-toxic Nuby wipes are a convenient solution, that allows you to simply wipe down toys, soothers and teethers removing 99.9% of germs. Unlike other sterilizing solutions, Nuby’s wipes are alcohol-free and leave a pleasant vanilla-milk flavour, so your baby won’t hate that you’re cleaning their toys.
12. Baby Sense Mommy and Baby Handbag
I have spoken about this incredible find time and time again, but earlier this week, I managed to pack our hospital bags and was reminded, just how great the Baby Sense Mommy and Baby Handbag truly really is. I remember with Axl, I struggled to find a bag that met my personal style, while having enough space to store absolutely everything needed for a baby or toddler. The Baby Sense Mommy and Baby Handbag is a fashionable yet functional nappy bag, designed to last and made from luxurious, faux leather, which is durable and easy to wipe clean. The bag also boasts a lot of space; 7 inner and two external full-length compartments to keep all your belongings secured and organised. They have also included a bunch of other features like two bottle holders, adjustable shoulder straps, stroller straps, and a padded, wipeable changing mat.
13. Chicco Double Soother Holder
If your baby takes to a soother, it’s a good idea to keep their soothers clean and always within reach, to prevent baby meltdowns whilst out and about. The Chicco Double Soother Holder lets you hygienically store two soothers separately from one another, meaning that you can keep a used soother in a different container from a sterilized one, thanks to its versatile design that converts to two separate containers. The strap allows you to easily attach the holder to your nappy bag, stroller or car seat, so that you always have a clean soother nearby.
