The ninth week of #365BeautyTips has come to an end and as promised, I have put together a round-up post which puts all the beauty tips, shared this week, in one place. The idea is to share any extra information and answer the questions that you may have asked on my social media posts. Remember that if you want to stay up to date with my 365 days of beauty challenge, then follow me on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
This week’s theme is… Mascara Wars!
#365BEAUTYTIPS – DAY: 57
Starting this week’s mascara wars, I opted for an affordable offering from Essence. Their new Multi-Action mascara adds volume, length and defines the lash line with a formula that clings to each lash, thanks to the conic shape of the wand. The very end of the plastic wand is narrow which helps grip the smaller lashes, like your inner and bottom lashes. As the wand grow wider, your outter lashes curl around the wand, giving it a flattering and natural curl. I love how the bristles are firm to separate even my most stubborn lashes and with the bristles being so very close to one another, they do a good job of coating each lash from root to tip. – For only R47.95, this lash-hugging formula is a gem.
#365BEAUTYTIPS – DAY: 58
Revlon has just launched an exciting range of mascaras and it would be silly not to include them in this week’s Mascara Wars! The idea is to do away with all the complicated questions that come along with finding the right mascara by introducing a range that addresses what we really want from mascaras. The Ultra All-in-One mascara boasts 5 lash transforming benefits: volume, length, definition, lift and intense colour. This is easily my favourite mascara from the new range and I am a huge fan of the unique Power Mini brush, which does such a good job of clinging onto my bottom lash line without causing that an annoying mess, the brush is also designed with a hollow core to deposit the formula evenly to create breathtaking lashes. I will be honest and say that in the beginning, I was a little apprehensive about such a tiny wand, but I like the flexibility it has given me, something which I haven’t found in any other mascara yet (and didn’t even know existed!). – R159
#365BEAUTYTIPS – DAY: 59
I discovered this mascara from Elizabeth Arden in December, when I bought the 2015 Blockbuster Giftset (my first purchase from the brand). Looking for VA-Va Voom lashes? I struck gold with this one (see what I did there?) The multi-dimensional mascara volumizes and lengthens but what I like most is that it helps curl the end of your lashes, for an eye-opening look that lasts all day. The formula is silky smooth and with a narrowed wand, allows for easy application from root to tip, it also happens to be flake-free and clump-free, making it the perfect everyday, long-lasting mascara. You know how Pinterest has one hundred tips on how to apply mascara the “correct” way, by zig zagging the wand from the root of your lashes, while this narrow wand is the perfect brush to do just that! – R220
#365BEAUTYTIPS – DAY: 60
I have always loved Almay’s trio’s of eyeshadow, so I am not too sure why I hadn’t tried their mascara sooner. This One Coat Multi-Benefit Mascara is a thick formula that boasts the ability to coat your lashes in a single swipe, promising thicker, fuller lashes. In fact, it proves to include 4 lash-benefits: massive volume, length, definition and nourishment with keratin. If you struggle to find good eye makeup because your eyes are sensitive, become red or itchy – then try Almay! My mother-in-law isn’t able to use any other brand, but discovered that Almay’s combination of quality ingredients are hypoallergenic, making for happy and pretty eyes . You will notice from the picture that the brush almost looks messy, the sticky-like formula is very similar to adding a primer or even using baby powder between applications, to create thicker and fuller looking lashes. I like that I don’t have to use any other products and still get those bold looking lashes. This has very easily crept into my top 3 mascaras and I am sure you will be seeing lots more of her in upcoming tutorials. – R125
#365BEAUTYTIPS – DAY: 61
I was very tempted to try a Revlon mascara per day, but decided to limit it and just feature two. The Volume + Length Magnified mascara is another thick formula that applies easily over the lashes. The square shaped wand allows the mascara to grab onto the edges of your lashes, making them appear to be thicker and longer. I certainly noticed the biggest difference on my bottom lash line but already have longer looking lashes so didn’t see much difference there. However, I always welcome more volume. The new range of mascaras from Revlon boast such eye-catching packaging and with so many to choose from, it can become a little overwhelming. However, as I have already pointed out, if you made me pick my favourite from their new range, The Ultimate All-in-One mascara is definitely it! – R149
#365BEAUTYTIPS – DAY: 62
Excuse my tired eyes in the below picture, I had the intention of retaking it but figured let’s keep it real! I had reached a new level of exhaustion and if it wasn’t for my fear of failing, I probably would have skipped the next two days of posts. The GOSH Boombastic XXL Swirl Volume Mascara caused quite the “swirl” in the beauty community, recently. The key ingredients make me want to squeal, with its infused argan oil and bamboo extract that improve lash volume and vitality while repairing any damage, making your lashes stronger, nourished and encouraging lash regeneration. What makes this mascara truly unique is the giant swirled rubber bristles which help grip the tiniest lashes as you swipe them. But to be very honest, I do tend to struggle with this mascara as the giant wand always seems to swipe my upper lid, leaving a little mess to clean up – not that it’s too much of a problem or anything new with bigger wands, but it does happen and in the effort to keep it honest, I thought it was worth mentioning. It may not show too well in my “I am an overworked WAHM” photo, but this mascara is great for creating a wide-eye look and dramatic definition. – R130
#365BEAUTYTIPS – DAY: 63
My last mascara feature, goes to probably the most expensive one of my entire collection. The Dior Addict It-Lash Mascara’s luxurious packaging had me hoping for the best mascara ever, fearing that I would never be able to find something that would quite compare to it, at an affordable price anyway. However, it was a sore disappointment in comparison to some of the mascaras that I have featured this week. The wand ranks high with its soft and supple elastomer brush to coat the full length of your lashes for better volume. Its spiked tip is what makes it stand out, as it catches even the tiniest lashes and makes it easy to move around and reach the bottom and in the inner corners, for that perfect doe eye (Similar to Revlon’s Ultimate All-In-One Mascara). But that’s about it. The formula isn’t as thick as I would hope for it to be. I like voluminous, pigmented lashes and while this mascara comes in a variety of colours, I just don’t see the formula payoff being what I want it to be. To be very honest, I wanted this to be the epitome of mascaras and it just wasn’t – it was underwhelming, at best and I have tried MANY budget mascaras that last longer and wear better, this was just… another mascara. – R722
