Africology Boardwalk Hotel - By Megan Kelly

Review: Africology Spa (Boardwalk Hotel)

Two weeks ago, the lovely folk at Africology invited me to a mommy-treat at their beautiful and luxurious spa. The last time I went to a spa, I had just found out that I was expecting and had to leave my facial every 10 minutes to pee! Since welcoming my bundle, I have been invited to review spas but Axl has always been too young (and reliant on my milk sources!) but alas the time has come where he is absolutely okay being left a good few hours, as long as he is kept busy. So after my mother-in-law agreed to looking after the kiddo and times were arranged, I was set to go for a much needed treat.

To be honest, things have been really hectic as of late. Hence, the blog has been quiet. Work has taken off with a bang and we’re currently preparing to take on the biggest franchising expo in the US. I have also been conducting interviews to hire two new people. The problem about being in the video game business is that EVERYONE wants to be in it too, I mean, who doesn’t want to get paid to play video games? So we had the biggest stream of resumes to go through and conduct interviews, from my little couch here in SA with US candidates – no easy task! PLUS Summer camps are kicking off, which is our busiest time of the year. Sjoe! My 5 hours a day just isn’t enough any more and the pressure of putting in more hours daily will very soon become a reality.

Then Darren’s work life isn’t going as great and we’re having to make big decisions and try dealing with the reality that our car and medical aid are reliant on his position. A position which seems very likely to disappear in the coming months due to the financial standing of the company that he works for.

So with all that being said, I was very much looking forward to the relaxation promised and oh my, Africology did not disappoint. It was marvelous!

Africology Spa-Reception area-1

Africology is located inside the stunningly up-market Boardwalk Hotel. You won’t need directions to the spa because you can just rely on your sense of smell. I was welcomed by friendly staff who showed me the changing rooms, before changing into one of those really  soft gowns and slops.DSC_02532

Outside waited my beauty-therapist named Lauren, she happily showed me around the spa and told me about all the packages they offer which include couple’s treatments and even some chocolate-kiddy ones, too! I honestly believe that a lot of my outrageously great experience is based on the overall attitude of Lauren, who I highly recommend when visiting. She showed me to the relaxation room, where I sipped ice-tea and waited to be shown to the room.

My treatment was called ‘gratitude and love’ which was a special for Mother’s Day and included a deep-cleansing renewal facial and full-body crystal massage.

The room was dimly lit – which immediately made me feel comfortable about my mommy-body (all the lumps and bumps weren’t on display!) The massage table was packed with soft towels, a blanket large enough to cover myself and towels rolled up to hold my head in comfortable positions.

My treatment was absolutely splendid.  It consisted of amethyst stones, aromatherapy oils and balancing out my chakras. I didn’t feel uncomfortable, as I usually do, Lauren was great and always checked in to see that I was still comfy. I wasn’t compelled to make small chat and instead switched off and enjoyed the soft music which played in the background, while experiencing an incredible body massage which seemed to have balanced my mind, body and soul.

Interestingly enough, I found that I didn’t realize how tired my body was until there was absolutely no distraction, noise or technology. It was just me, with the lights out, calming music and comforting scents. The time off was exactly what I needed!

Africology Spa-2

DSC_02452After my indulging 2 hours of complete me-time, the ladies prepared the nicest sweet treats (they must’ve known how much I like chocolate) a long with Africology’s very own ice-tea which is absolutely divine! I mentioned that I needed to go meet my mother-in-law and they were nice enough to welcome her and the Axe-man to the spa, to enjoy the treats, too.

If it were up to me, I would go for this treatment at least once a month (I told my boss that night that we need to budget for my monthly retreat). I walked out feeling younger, lighter and motivated to get my ass into gear. I couldn’t be more grateful for such a great morning spent indulging in pure relaxation.
