I made 2014 my year!

I am not all about the “new year, new me” or… “20xx will be my year!” I pretty much start the year just as I would start any other day. I started 2014 VERY pregnant and before long, we welcomed Axl into our lives. It scares me to think that very soon, we will be celebrating his 1st birthday, I mean… where has time gone?

But besides becoming a mother, 2014 has been very kind to me. I launched Baby Blog and in September, I hosted my first mom’s meetup. Beauty Blog took off and before long, both blogs had a good amount of daily visits, regular postings and I even managed to partner up with some extraordinary brands! I never thought that my blogs would grow as it has and it’s been an absolute pleasure being able to share my passions, experiences and day-to-day life with you.

Reflecting back, there are quite a few things that have happened in the last year that I never thought would happen… ever!

Can we just admire how proud my husband looks in this picture, I can’t get over it!

1. I gave birth… no epidurals, cuts or swearing

Giving natural birth was probably the most empowering thing that I have ever done. I cannot handle any form of pain and was scared shitless about having to push a baby out. I tried reading up how to prepare myself for the big day, but the idea of squatting at 125 kgs heavy and massaging some place below that I could hardly reach, just seemed ridiculous. I ended up having to be induced and faced a couple of hours of torturous pain, but despite being completely exhausted, I was determined to have my baby in my arms before 1pm on the 28 February!

2. I took control of my health

I look back at the day where I announced to my readers that I was determined to get healthy and fit. The overwhelming response and support has been my biggest motivation! And while I still have a very long way to go, I am proud of how far I have come. 27kgs lighter feeling great and dare I say… motivated to exercise. I have been taking regular walks and have even decided to partake in the Sleekgeek challenge next year. For Christmas, I didn’t ask for clothes or makeup or things that would usually fit in with my blog, I asked for a fitness watch. I mean, I never pictured it. Nevermind walking and looking forward to it. Today, for the first time, I decided to jog. My mom must be laughing, just reading this, as I am not the type to get off my ass, let alone jog! In addition, I have also signed up for medical insurance to cover doctor and hospital visits. Which is a great relief as I have been stressing about the ‘what ifs’ especially as Darren is covered, but Axl and I were not, which meant in a car accident, Darren would go to private care, and we’d be in government care. (Yes, these are the things that keep me up at night)

3. I started wearing jeans

This seems like something so stupid but until June ’14, I haven’t owned a pair of jeans for about 7 years. I never felt comfortable in them and always found they sit horribly or hurt in places due to ill-fitting styles. I am happy to say that I have finally started wearing jeans that fit just right and even have a favourite pair of crops, to see me through the summer!

4. I cut off all my hair

WOW… This is a huge one! I laugh when I think about my visit to the hairdresser 3 months ago, I was contemplating layers and eventually settled on not having them done, thinking it was too big of a change. So what did I do this past weekend? I chopped it all off into a long-bob. I freakin love the change! It is so much quicker to wash, brush and dry these days, not to mention how little product I require. The new hairstyle is lighter and has made me feel so confident. I absolutely looove it!

5. I found my happiness

I have never felt such contentment and happiness, like I have at the moment. Just looking at the pictures, in this post, I smile at how happy I am – never pictured life to be so great! I am not saying 2014 hasn’t had it’s downs. There were times that I didn’t think we’d be able to afford food on the table, and times I questioned my ability as a mom and wife. But the highs outweigh the lows by a landslide. I am so grateful for the people that are in my life, I have said goodbye to a lot of people who were here for the wrong reasons, welcomed new friends with open arms and together we’ve gone on a ride. It’s been one helluva great one!

What’s 2015 got planned?

The big thing that we’re hoping to achieve in the new year, is a move. Not just houses, but quite possibly towns too. As much as I complain about little ol’ PE, Darren and I have always wanted to settle in a much smaller town like Knysna or Port Alfred. Our first weekend away together, we spent in Port Alfred, where we visited his childhood holiday spot and stayed in chalets. I’d never been there, other than stopping by at the garage to get some food while travelling through. We’ve gone back a few times since, and plan on revisiting in early January for a short holiday.  Ultimately, if all goes to plan, we’d like to make the move in April which gives us little over 3 months to make it happen. Personally, I like the idea of small-town life, you know? Where you know who’s who and you make muffins for the new neighbours. I suppose, I’d be my own Bree Vandekamp, if it were up to me.
With the move, it’s mean Darren leaves his job behind. This is a big risk but with how well he has been doing these last two months on designing websites, alone, I don’t see it being a problem. Fortunately for me, my job goes a long wherever I go. My position at MGR is pretty much set in cement, as I have become to only one working in admin, all the responsibility falls on me. The last month has been a big adjustment, as I take on more responsibility and now only get Sundays off. But I have fallen back inlove with my job. I’ve been given the freedom to create new systems and implement new changes, making life at MGR a lot easier. On the side though, D and I have been talking about starting our own little online store which we’ve started to put together and although it’s a slow process with us being so busy, it will all happen when the time is right.
2015 is the year my mom turns 40 – that still gives me a giggle – it’s also the year that Axl celebrates his first birthday and funny enough, it’s all in the same month, 21 days apart. With these big milestones, I do hope that the new year will bring more opportunities to seeing my mom and enjoying these celebrations, together.
Other than that, we have no other plans. I keep getting asked about baby number 2 and my answer to that is, not for a long time, if ever. As much as looking at Axl makes me all broody inside, I am quite enjoying each phase and embracing it as it comes. I am still breastfeeding and would like to continue doing so for another year. Darren has mentioned the subject a few times in the last week, but I think it’s just a phase as he accepts how much Axl is growing. We never intended on having more than 1, but who knows what the future may hold. For all we know, this big move might be just what we need to build a steady future for our kid(s).
Blog wise, I have a few ideas for new posts, that I plan on working on now, new giveaways and some changes that I’d like to implement. I have some goals set out, like becoming more active on social media and sharing my posts more often, as I am sure a few of you miss out. I am really proud how far I’ve come in a year and am looking forward to seeing what the new year brings.

Holiday Plans

This will very likely be my last post for 2014 as Darren gets off from work tomorrow and the craziness begins. I have 5 days off, for the season and a whole lot of family to fit in, between. Our plans include a day-trip to Plett to see cousins and introduce babies, Christmas with my dad on the 24th, Christmas with my in-laws on the 25th, my mom arrives the following day and Darren’s brother arrives the day after that. New Years is still unclear where or what we’ll be doing, but it will most likely be close to home. And finally, in the first week of January, as I mentioned, we’ll be heading to Port Alfred for a few days.
A huge thank you to all the brands and companies who I have partnered up with, this year, you have all been extraordinary and have gone a mile and beyond to ensure the best service delivery. Thank you to my readers, family and friends far and near, who have supported me, motivated me and helped me grow.
Thank you all for wonderful year, may the new year be just as fulfilling!

And as it goes… Happy Holidays to all!

P.S. remember to follow me on Instagram to see what we’re up to 😉
